This month a new universal reuse symbol was launched by PR3 | the Global Alliance to Advance Reuse to help identify packaging that is part of reuse systems. Reuse is where a packaging is cleaned and used multiple times before being later recycled or discarded.

"In a sustainable circular economy, reuse plays a central role. Following the concept of the waste hierarchy, reducing unnecessary consumption comes first, followed by reuse, and then only after recycling becomes an option.

👉 The new reuse symbol can only be used where functioning reuse systems are in place, which includes functioning collection, washing, and redistribution.Products that are only theoretically reusable are not allowed to have the symbol added.
👉 Reuse differs fundamentally from recycling. Instead of reprocessing materials, reuse keeps packaging in circulation across multiple cycles, reducing the need for single-use materials.
👉 Reusable packaging can still raise chemical safety concerns. For non-inert materials like plastics, repeated use, washing, and wear can increase the migration of hazardous chemicals into food, especially when the material is scratched or damaged.
👉 Reusable systems with packaging based on highly inert materials like stainless steel, ceramics, and glass can significantly reduce consumer exposure to hazardous chemicals.
As interest in reuse grows, clear communication tools like this symbol can help distinguish reuse systems from recycling and single-use packaging.

Reuse logo
As the PR3 logo is a global logo, what would be a good strategy to push it forward - press release
Story of stuff is going to share a video in July, put question is how to approach the logo
Criteria, like minimum rotations, is not included, so could be used for greenwashing? The PR3 Performance Metrics standard is being developed and the minimum requirements need to be confirmed.
Fanny: the logo has 6 underlying standards some are still under development, including performance metric discussions
Hopefully will have strong standards behind the logo
Might not reach EU market due to PPWR reusable packaging label
